Where can you book a flight under $100? Southwest Airlines. It also depends on the airport. My preference is Midway. I last visited Detroit to see K’Jon perform. Before that, I was in the Motor City for a friend’s wedding. Now, I am back in Detroit for a quick trip. I secured my A-List Status until December 2025 and earned my first flight towards A-List Preferred. One benefit of A-List status is you no longer worry about securing a boarding position.
I found a round-trip fare on Southwest for $95 during Memorial Day weekend and started my countdown towards A-List Preferred. Hilton upgraded my room in Phoenix and Hartford. Of course, I looked forward to receiving an email for an upgrade at Embassy Suites by Hilton Detroit Airport. I never received that email.
I chose Embassy Suites by Hilton for several reasons: complimentary hotel shuttle, indoor and outdoor pool, free breakfast, and evening reception. Although I booked a flight under $100, I knew the hotel would be slightly more expensive because of the holiday. However, I had a $50 Hilton Honors Gift Card. I arrived at noon, and the only room (139) available was on the 1st floor directly in front of the hotel across the street.
During check-in, I received a drink card, a choice of snacks, and water. As stated on the website, part of the lobby is under construction. There is a two-drink limit during the evening reception. However, you can purchase additional cocktails and specialty drinks.
I stopped by the made-to-order counter for an egg white omelet and pancakes for breakfast. Other options included breakfast potatoes, French toast sticks, bacon, eggs, cereal, bagels, and muffins. Although it may appear like I spent a lot on a one-night stay, I saved money on snacks, cocktails, breakfast, and transportation.
Of course, I tipped the bartender, chef, and shuttle driver. I checked out at 11:00AM and caught the shuttle to the airport. Oh, I forgot to pack my swimsuit.
I arrived in Detroit before noon and purchased souvenirs as I headed to the hotel shuttle area. If you are unaware, I collect Christmas ornaments. My original plan was to order food from the Burger Bar, but the restaurant did not open until 3:00PM. The front desk clerk suggested I walk to Big Boy. I ordered the Liver Special to go. When I opened my container, the liver was swimming in gravy, and I barely recognized the mashed potatoes. However, the well-seasoned liver delighted my palate. I blended the gravy into the mashed potatoes. Although the hostess warned me about the tomato-based tortilla soup, it was tasty. I would dine here again. Am I the only person who has never eaten at Big Boy?
I did not request a late checkout because I was going to the Lufthansa Business Lounge in the Warren C. Evans Terminal. However, I was denied entry as a Priority Pass Member because of the blackout period from noon to 4:00PM. My flight under $100 was at 3:00. My other option was to go to the McNamara Terminal to relax in the Minute Suites. I enjoyed my snacks from Embassy Suites while I sat at the gate.
Although the drive from Chicago to Detroit is slightly over four hours, it costs $53 to fill my gas tank each way. It was cheaper to fly. The total cost for this trip was $403 (airfare, accommodations, dining, souvenirs, tips, and Midway parking). I enjoyed this quick stay in the Motor City. I will return for the 2025 Auto Show.
The trip should have cost $353, but I forgot to pack the gift card. If you are looking for travel tips and tricks or how to use travel rewards programs to offset the cost of your vacation, visit my website. If you are taking the 50 State Challenge, look for a flight under $100.
