October is the best time to visit Chicago. Why? Open House Chicago (OHC) is a FREE, 2-day event that allows visitors to go behind the scenes of architecturally, historically, and culturally significant sites in neighborhoods across the city. This year, OHC is happening on October 19-20, 2024. Join the festivities.

The Forum

South Side

I discovered OHC by accident seven years ago while driving down 43rd Street. My very first site was The Forum. Are you a fan of the One Chicago Franchise on Wednesday nights? If so, you may recognize the Forum from its cameo in Chicago P.D. Season 5, Episode 17. The Forum has been a staple of OHC and features an assembly hall with several spacious retail spaces next to the Green Line Station. After visiting the Forum, I ventured to 35th Street to explore the Chicago Maritime Museum, which focuses on preserving and celebrating our rich maritime heritage.

OHC 2018

West Side

After a Saturday on the South Side, I visited Assumption Greek Orthodox Church in Austin. It was incredible to revisit my first high school, now the home of Catalyst Circle Rock. I also attempted to visit the Frank Lloyd Wright Home and Studio, but the line stretched three blocks long.

MoodyTongue

Pilsen

One of the highlights of my OHC experience has been Moody Tongue Brewing Company. I discovered chocolate beer and indulged in a 12-layer German chocolate cake. In addition, I took part in a FREE brewery tour. I have shared my love for Moody Tongue with family and friends since 2018. While the original Pilsen location has closed, you can still visit them at their South Loop spot at 2515 S. Wabash. By the way, Moody Tongue is now a 2-star Michelin restaurant.

West Town

In 2019, I downloaded the OHC map from the Chicago Architecture Center website and curated a list of places to visit. You can also build your itinerary by clicking on this link. I started my tour in West Town at Big Delicious Planet (BDP), an urban farm with a fantastic café, the Canteen. Although it closed during the pandemic, I am happy to report it is back open Monday through Friday. Unfortunately, the Canteen will not be open during OHC, but hopefully, BDP will participate again in 2025.

Bridgeport: A Hidden Gem of Open House Chicago

Bubbly Dynamics is a unique space where the Chicago Tool Library started. You can borrow tools instead of buying them—a game-changer for DIY enthusiasts. Although the Tool Library has since moved to a location in the West Garfield Park neighborhood to support its volume of tools, you can add it to your Saturday OHC itinerary because it is closed on Sunday. During my 2019 visit, after exploring Bubbly, I stumbled upon the Repertorio Latino Theater Company, also in Bridgeport. If you are a theater lover, this is a must-visit spot! That marked my final stop for OHC 2019, but the memories and discoveries made Bridgeport one of my favorite neighborhoods to explore.

OHC 2022

OHC 2022: Discovering More in Bridgeport

In 2022, I volunteered at the Chicago Sustainable Manufacturing Center, formerly Bubbly Dynamics, where I had the chance to assist visitors while learning from a fellow volunteer. He introduced me to The Duck Inn, a local gem for anyone seeking a unique culinary experience—worth adding to your list. After my three-hour shift, I still had time to visit Hatch41. Why should you check it out? Omni Ecosystems has created an urban paradise on the roof—a lush green oasis perfect for anyone interested in sustainable design and urban farming. October is the best time to visit Chicago, and Bridgeport is brimming with hidden treasures during OHC.

Plan your OHC itinerary, and add these Bridgeport gems to your list.

Boxville 2023

OHC 2023 Bronzeville

For Open House Chicago 2023, I volunteered for the first shift at Boxville—a vibrant and creative marketplace made from shipping containers that promote local entrepreneurs. If you believe in supporting small businesses and value community-driven economic development, Boxville is a must-visit. It’s truly an embodiment of the community spirit that OHC highlights. I stopped by Da Book Joint, an independent bookstore. It is a hidden gem offering everything from contemporary titles to hard-to-find local authors.

Sports & Entertainment

Catch a preseason Bulls game at the United Center and feel the energy of the Madhouse on Madison. Look for me at a game. I am a season ticket holder. Head to Washington Park to experience the incredible UniverSoul Circus, where culture meets entertainment in an unforgettable show.

Food, Drinks, and Sweets

Chicago’s food scene extends beyond deep-dish pizza, hot dogs, and Italian beef. For a local favorite, check out Maria’s Packaged Goods and Community Bar or Kimski in Bridgeport, where you can enjoy a unique fusion of Korean-Polish eats. Antique Taco is a must for delicious and creative twists on a classic dish. For an elevated night out, head to VU Rooftop in the South Loop for a breathtaking view while sipping cocktails. And if you love donuts, do not miss The Vault—but be quick! Their donuts sell out fast, so check their Instagram first. AmazCakes in the Back of the Yards neighborhood offers mouthwatering creations that satisfy your cravings for sweets.
