October is the best time to visit Chicago. Why? Open House Chicago is a FREE, 2-day event that allows visitors to go behind the scenes of architecturally, historically, and culturally significant sites in neighborhoods across the city. This year, OHC will take place on October 18-19, 2025. Join the festivities.
I discovered OHC by accident eight years ago while driving down 43rd Street. My very first site was The Forum. Are you a fan of the One Chicago Franchise on Wednesday nights? If so, you may recognize the Forum from its cameo in Chicago P.D. Season 5, Episode 17. The Forum has been a staple of OHC, featuring an assembly hall with several spacious retail spaces adjacent to the Green Line Station. After visiting the Forum, I ventured to 35th Street to explore the Chicago Maritime Museum, which focuses on preserving and celebrating our rich maritime heritage.
After a Saturday on the South Side, I visited Assumption Greek Orthodox Church in Austin on Sunday. It was incredible to revisit my first high school, now the home of Catalyst Circle Rock. I also attempted to visit the Frank Lloyd Wright Home and Studio, but the line stretched three blocks long.
One of the highlights of my OHC experience has been Moody Tongue Brewing Company. I discovered chocolate beer and indulged in a 12-layer German chocolate cake. In addition, I participated in a complimentary brewery tour. I have shared my love for Moody Tongue with family and friends since 2018. While the original Pilsen location has closed, you can still visit them at their South Loop spot at 2515 S. Wabash. By the way, Moody Tongue is now a 2-star Michelin restaurant.
In 2019, I downloaded the OHC map from the Chicago Architecture Center website and curated a list of places to visit. I started my tour in West Town at Big Delicious Planet (BDP), an urban farm with a fantastic café, the Canteen. Unfortunately, the Canteen closed after the pandemic. Even though it reopened briefly in 2024, it is now closed again. The tuna panini was delicious. Hopefully, BDP will be listed as a stop in 2025, or purchase tickets to their Urban Farm Dinner.
Bubbly Dynamics is a unique space where the Chicago Tool Library started. You can borrow tools instead of buying them—a game-changer for DIY enthusiasts. The library relocated to the West Garfield Park neighborhood to support its volume of tools. After exploring Bubbly, I stumbled upon the Repertorio Latino Theater Company, also in Bridgeport. If you are a theater lover, this is a must-visit spot. That marked my final stop for OHC 2019, but the memories and discoveries made Bridgeport one of my favorite neighborhoods to explore.
In 2022, I volunteered at Bubbly Dynamics (Chicago Sustainable Manufacturing Center), where I assisted visitors. My volunteer partner introduced me to The Duck Inn, a local gem for anyone seeking a unique culinary experience. After my three-hour shift, I still had time to visit Hatch41. Why should you check it out? Omni Ecosystems has created an urban paradise on the roof—a lush green oasis perfect for anyone interested in sustainable design and urban farming. October is the best time to visit Chicago, and Bridgeport is brimming with hidden treasures during OHC.
For Open House Chicago 2023, I volunteered for the first shift at Boxville on Sunday. Boxville is a vibrant and creative marketplace made from shipping containers that promotes local entrepreneurs. If you believe in supporting small businesses and value community-driven economic development, Boxville is a must-visit. It’s truly an embodiment of the community spirit that OHC highlights. I stopped by Da Book Joint, an independent bookstore. It is a hidden gem offering everything from contemporary titles to hard-to-find local authors.
If you have an opportunity to attend an event at Ramova, you are in for a treat. The original movie projectors and stained-glass windows are beautifully displayed when you look up from the lobby. Tyler and Emily have worked tirelessly to renovate the theatre. Because I volunteered at Ramova on Sunday, I visited Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church on Saturday. Did you see the church featured on the Chicago episode of the Netflix series Somebody Feed Phil, Season 3? I spoke to members who have been at the church for over 50 years. Sunday morning service starts at 11.
My last stop for OHC 2024 was ZHOU B Art Center. The open space features work displayed over three levels. Do not forget to check out the artist in the basement. Oh, and I passed by a beauty salon on one of the floors. If you need a unique space to host your next event, ask about the Secret Garden.
October continues to prove that it’s the best time to visit Chicago. Whether you are a lifelong Chicagoan or visiting for the weekend, Open House Chicago is an event you do not want to miss. Want to know more about Open House Chicago? Be sure to visit the OHC website for the latest information and sign up for E-news to stay in the loop. Here are a few suggestions for additional things to do in Chicago in October.
Catch a preseason Bulls game at the United Center and feel the energy at the Madhouse on Madison, or drive to Washington Park to experience the incredible UniverSoul Circus, where culture meets entertainment in an unforgettable show.

Chicago’s food scene extends beyond deep-dish pizza and hot dogs, like
(1) Maria’s Packaged Goods and Community Bar or Kimski in Bridgeport, where you can enjoy a unique fusion of Korean-Polish eats, (2) Antique Taco is a must for delicious and creative twists on classic dishes, (3) VU Rooftop in the South Loop for a breathtaking view while sipping cocktails, (4) donuts at The Vault, and (5) AmazCakes in the Back of the Yards neighborhood for their mouthwatering creations.
