I spent New Year’s Eve in Old Town Alexandria. Are you looking for a potential travel dupe? Have you crossed off Virginia as you complete the 50 States Challenge? Here are seven reasons why King Street in Old Town Alexandria is worth a stay to bring in the new year.

Old Town Alexandria

1. Charm of Old Town Alexandria King Street

You will be charmed as you walk down King Street. I love the cobblestone stone streets. If you are into 18th and 19th-century architecture, you will enjoy the beauty of the well-preserved buildings.

2. Accommodations

There are accommodations to fit almost any budget. We were in Washington for the inauguration in 2021. We stayed in Old Town Alexandria on King Street because it was less expensive. I used Hilton Honors points to offset the cost of our stay at Hampton Inn & Suites. We stayed at the upscale Lorien Hotel & Spa and used American Express Platinum Card Benefits to bring in 2024. I redeemed the $200 Hotel Credit, received an early check-in and late check-out, and dined at both hotel restaurants using the $100 Experience Credit.

3. King Street Hop-On-Hop-Off Trolley

Although I like to walk, the hop-on-hop-off trolley is a convenient mode of transportation on King Street, especially if you shop in Old Town Alexandria. Do not rely on the trolley to get to and from the fireworks. We had to catch an Uber. The trolleys were at capacity for the 6 p.m. show.

Midnight Treats

4. Support Local

When I travel, I try to support small businesses like Alexandria Cupcakes or Midnight Treats, where you can indulge in delicious treats while supporting the community. My cupcakes were delicious, and Kim enjoyed a chocolate chip cookie.

5. Old Town Alexandria Dining

As you can see, I mentioned dessert first. Dining options in Old Town Alexandria are diverse, from authentic European Cuisine at the Tasting Room to the vibrant flavors of Vola’s. The well-seasoned calamari and hush puppies are sharable. Do you want refills on selected libations? Oh, the Bloody Mary included shrimp. If you are a sports fan, stop by Augie’s. We watched the Bears vs Atlanta game. I ordered a brisket sandwich while Kim ordered Brunch.

6. Strolling Along the Potomac River

You cannot hang out in Old Town Alexandria without strolling along the waterfront to enjoy the scenic views and relaxing ambiance.

7. Fireworks

There are two fireworks shows that light up the sky over the Potomac. The first show at 6 p.m. lasted nine minutes, and the show at midnight lasted four. If you go to the 6th floor of the Lorien, you can see the fireworks without leaving the hotel.

Old Town Alexandria King Street Budget

We had a great time. Did you know Old Town Alexandria received recognition by Conde Nast Traveler in 2023 as the third-best small town in the United States? The cozy accommodations, convenient transportation, culinary delights, and festive New Year’s Eve celebrations make Alexandria a must-visit destination. There are no fireworks in Washington to bring in the new year. Don’t forget your running shoes.
