In this post, I share how I traveled the day before Thanksgiving to Milwaukee for $42.50. My blog is not about where you should travel. I reveal my travel experiences based on personal preferences, but you may do things differently. Where can I go on my day off before Thanksgiving?
I woke up Wednesday morning and decided to drive to Christkindlmarket Milwaukee. Admission is free. You look through this annual outdoor market for handcrafted ornaments and unique holiday gifts. You cannot leave without trying traditional German foods and beverages. I have been to Christkindlmarket Naperville, but Milwaukee hosted their first year at Fiserv Forum. I googled Christkindlmarket Milwaukee, checked the drive time, dressed appropriately, and headed out. My gas tank was half-full. However, I stopped at the gas station to check my tire pressure. My estimated travel time was less than 2 hours. I also tried something different and took the scenic route.
I arrived at the market by noon. Street parking was available nearby for $2.50 for 90 minutes. The market was smaller than I expected, but the Katie Wolfbar tent had thousands of ornaments. I collect Christmas ornaments from my travels. I started this tradition years ago, and I have a separate collection of college ornaments for the tree in my office. You cannot go to Christkindlmarket and leave without buying roasted nuts. I purchased two bags of nuts and products from A Blend Above.
You also have to try the hot chocolate. I stopped by the vendor advertising Godiva chocolate. He added a jumbo marshmallow to my mug of hot chocolate. Of course, I purchased the souvenir mug. I also tried hot-spiced wine (Glühwein). I took advantage of buying the souvenir mug because I saved $2 on all refills. If you did not recognize the pattern, I love everything Christmas. Do you remember I attended the Holiday Food Gift Festival in Portland?
I headed to the Mayfair Mall and then stopped by DSW at another mall nearby. It was getting late, so I filled my tank and headed home. I did not anticipate the traffic created by people on their way to the airport. It took over three hours to get back to Chicago. I could have stayed in Milwaukee, went to the movies at the mall, got a room at Homewood Suites by Hilton in Wauwatosa, and headed home in the morning. If I go back to Milwaukee for Christkindlmarket, I will plan differently. You may be planning a road trip, which is how I traveled the day before Thanksgiving for $42.50.
