Are you interested in volunteering for Open House Chicago in 2026? The third weekend of October brings the annual Open House Chicago (OHC), a FREE event organized by the Chicago Architecture Center (CAC), offering behind-the-scenes access to some of the most amazing architecturally, culturally, and historically significant buildings in the city. If you enjoy learning about Chicago while engaging with and helping people, volunteering for Open House Chicago is an amazing opportunity. Volunteers, also known as Greeters, are the face of OHC and essential to the event’s success. All it takes is enthusiasm for the city and a willingness to chat with visitors.

Benefits:
I volunteered for a morning shift at District Brew Yards from 10:45AM. to 2:45PM. Four volunteer openings were available for this site; two per shift. This was my fourth year supporting OHC, and I like to select a morning shift so I can visit other sites in the afternoon. I was happy to volunteer at District Brew Yards. I chatted with visitors and directed them to the tour, which started every 30 minutes.
District Brew Yards is the nation’s first collective pour-your-own production brewery and beer hall under one roof. There are multiple independent local breweries in this space, allowing them to share knowledge and equipment, which might otherwise be too expensive. It operates as a self-serve, cashless bar with 40 taps, offering a unique experience for craft beer lovers. It also features incredible BBQ from Lillie’s Q (the smoked wings are a personal favorite.) I took the tour myself so I could answer questions about the facility. Plus, it’s one of my go-to spots before catching a Chicago Bulls game at the United Center, thanks to the convenient, free parking. My relief arrived at 1:45, and I strongly recommended she take the tour before starting her shift. I then took a 5-minute walk to the Roof Crop.
A bit further away in Andersonville, the Chicago Magic Lounge is an entertainment venue specializing in Chicago-style magic. Only 25 visitors were allowed at a time. Yes, I was the first person in line on Sunday morning. My experience began with entering through a hidden door—it’s a truly immersive theater experience. After a brief chat, we moved to the Harry Blackstone Cabaret Theatre. The group then toured the 654 Club. Only 44 seats are available. The final stop on the tour was the Performance Bar. By the way, a show ticket is not required for a cocktail and food at the bar. My crew is going to the Black Illusionist show in November.
Put the date in your calendar right now. OHC will return October 17-18, 2026. You do not want to miss this event again. Of course, I am looking forward to discovering more about my city. I will volunteer at Open House Chicago in 2026. I hope to see you at one of the sites.
