How do non-golfers enjoy themselves while visiting Hilton Head Island? A rare snowstorm in South Carolina changed my plans to vacation at HGV Club Ocean Oak Resort in 2017. Six years later, a two-bedroom was available in January during Winter Break. I redeemed 3,000 Club Points from my Max account.
As I mentioned in several posts, I use my HGV timeshare ownership to vacation at least three or four times a year. I flew into Savannah, rented a car from Budget using the American Express Portal, and drove to Ocean Oak. It is an easy drive from the Savannah Airport to Hilton Head Island. Shuttle services and taxis are also available for convenient travel to the island. Although I invited a friend, she did not make the trip. However, I do not have a problem traveling solo.
I arrived at the resort in an hour. Check-in was a breeze. I settled into my room on the 4th floor. Ocean Oak is a beautiful property. There was more than enough space for me in this two-bedroom unit. Amenities include a full kitchen, living/dining room, and washer/dryer. Because I like saving money when I travel, I drove to Publix first for groceries. If there is a stove in the unit, I will cook. Of course, I picked up plenty of water. I had a partial view of the sunsets from my balcony overlooking one of the pools. The Atlantic Ocean is a short walk away. Of course, I checked the Hilton website. The rate was $935 for three nights. I also saw an advertisement for the same unit. The rate was $3272 for seven nights during the first week in April.
Check the activity calendar for events at the resort and around Hilton Head. I went on a nature walk at Audubon Newhall Preserve. There was also the HGV Owner Appreciation Cookies & Cocoa Social. I love a good cup of hot chocolate. Of course, I sat on the beach to watch the beautiful sunsets, but Harbour Town Lighthouse offers panoramic views of the island. Finally, there is shopping. I had to buy new luggage at T.J. Maxx in the Plaza at Shelter Cove Shopping Center. I broke the handle on my luggage when I boarded the plane to Savannah. If you want brand-name bargains, drive a few miles to Tanger Outlet. I stuffed my suitcase with clothes from H&M and Lucky Brand.
First, try Oceanside for a cocktail, hushpuppies, and live entertainment. The bar sits between the pools. I enjoyed a Skinny Margarita without alcohol. Do not sit at the bar; relax by the fire pit. When I travel, I try not to order pizza. Who makes pizza better than Chicago? However, I read the reviews for Giuseppi’s Pizza and Pasta House before I left the resort. The restaurant is in the same shopping center as T.J. Maxx, but it was a 25-minute wait for take-out. I should have placed my order while I looked for luggage.
There are two One Hot Mama’s American Grill locations. In 2024, I will earn more Hilton Honors points for things I already do, like dining. If you carry the Hilton Honors card and dine out, you should link your card to the Hilton Honors Dining Program. I earned 185 Hilton Honors Dining Bonus points. Remember, cardholders also earn 6X points on eligible purchases at restaurants. Oh, I ordered Deviled Eggs and Brisket. The eggs were delicious, the fries crispy, and the baked beans tasty, but I did not enjoy the fatty brisket.
I enjoy shopping. As long as there is a mall nearby, I am happy. Although I was on vacation, I scheduled two Zoom meetings and worked on updating my website. The weather was beautiful when I arrived. I wore a light jacket during my stay. It started raining on the last day of my vacation. Overall, I was well-rested and enjoyed my time on Hilton Head Island. Non-golfers on Hilton Head Island will have plenty of things to do while vacationing. As always, you can book any property in the HGV portfolio. Finally, do not forget your sunscreen.
